Alicia Silverstone for Juice Beauty Purely Kissable Lip Color {Review}

Pros: Ecological packaging, flattering shade, moisturizing formula
Cons: Only one shade available, slightly off-putting scent, cardboard packaging is easily scuffed

The first time I saw the all vegan line of Alicia Silverstone Collection for Juice Beauty in an Ulta ad, I knew I wanted to try it…but then I totally forgot about it. I randomly rediscovered the line last month while I was making an order on Drugstore.com.

At the time of purchase a couple weeks ago, I was not aware of Juice Beauty’s decision to sell in China. However, I discovered that Juice Beauty has since reversed their decision. You can read more about the decision here. So if you had wanted to try Juice Beauty in the past, you can now do so.

If there was ever a product I wanted to love, this is it. I had a lot of high hopes and wasn’t sure it would deliver. Fortunately, I have been pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of the Purely Kissable Lip Color.

Packaging

I was pretty sure the Purely Kissable Lip Color was vegan because, you know, Alicia Silverstone. I couldn’t find any notice of that on the Drugstore.com/Beauty.com website, but both the box and lipstick packaging have “Vegan” printed on them. In retrospect, I think this may have been due to Juice Beauty’s decision to sell in China. Or it could be that Beauty.com doesn’t cater to vegans?

One aspect that sets this product from others is that the packaging is largely made of cardboard. I have complained in the past about companies using so-called “eco” packaging when they are only using extraneous material to cover the existing container. The packaging for the Purely Kissable Lip Color is definitely more environmentally conscious than most. The main lipstick base is plastic, but the cap and part of the base are made from recycled paper and are recyclable.

The problem I have with the product is that the cap fits on the base too well and is difficult to remove. The tip of my lipstick was damaged and it’s possible this is due to my difficulty removing the cap the first time I opened it.

Formulation

The lipstick has a great creamy and moisturizing consistency. I usually have issues with lipstick drying out my lips, but fortunately I don’t have to worry about that with this product. I also don’t feel a need to use a lip balm before applying, which is a first.

The Purely Kissable Lip Color is also certified organic by the USDA. This is mentioned all over the box and there is a sticker label on the top of the lipstick.

It’s faint, but there is a slightly off-putting scent to this product. I think it has to do with the types of waxes used.

Shade

This is an odd product because there only one “universal shade” available. I would think a lipstick line should have four or five colors, at a bare minimum.

I was worried how the shade with work with my warm undertones after I read reviews that the Purely Kissable Lip Color is a mauve shade, but I am pleased to say that the color is a very flattering neutral. Definitely a MLBB pink.

I kinda doubt this product works for all skin tones like it claims. While this is a neutral shade, I think the lipstick works best for those on the lighter to medium end of the spectrum.

Conclusion

I definitely recommend this product.

As I said before, I had a bunch of high hopes for the Purely Kissable Lip Color and I think it held up fairly well despite my misgivings about only being available in one shade available.

I am definitely interested in trying the rest of the Alicia Silverstone for Juice Beauty line. I had intended to purchase the Irresistible Glow Facial Highlighter as well, but it was a little above my price point that day at $22 USD. I’m actually surprised that the highlighter costs so much more than the lipstick. As a budget shopper, I was already hesitant to spend $16 on one lipstick (ah, e.l.f. spoils me so much). I tried to buy it during a “Green and Natural Department” sale on Drugstore.com, but the Juice Beauty products didn’t qualify because they are Beauty.com items. (=_=)
