e.l.f Beauty Book: Nude ~2013 Walgreens Holiday Collection~ {Review}

This post contains affiliate links Pros: Good selection of trendy shades, pretty packaging, economically priced
Cons: Glitter shades have almost no pigmentation, lots of fallout

I am a huge fan of the e.l.f. Beauty Books. I like to pick up one for each LE collection at Target. And now apparently I’ll have to start collecting the Walgreens versions as well.

While the white Walgreens version is limited to stores, I have found an identical e.l.f. Essential Holiday Eyeshadow Book on the website.

For more information on what e.l.f. holiday sets are available at Walgreens stores this winter, you can read my earlier post on the matter.

Beauty Book: Nude

Rating: B+
Price: $5 USD
Weight: 18g eyeshadow/.5g eyeliner
Where to Buy: Walgreens stores

This Beauty Book contains only nine shadows and is similar to the Target Beauty Book I purchased at Gordmans from the Spring 2013 collection.

Packaging

This is a rare white e.l.f. palette. The Walgreens LE e.l.f. collection theme is white and gold this holiday season, and this palette conveys it well. It really is an eye-catching Beauty Book.

Inside of the e.l.f. Beauty Book: Nude

I’d you aren’t familiar with the e.l.f. Beauty Books, they are constructed from cardboard and foam with (usually) magnetic closures. Here, there are nine eyeshadow pans, but usually there are twelve. This palette also features a clear plastic window to see what shades are inside.

Also included is a double-ended sponge tip applicator and a mini Brightening Eyeliner in Black.

Back of the e.l.f. Beauty Book: Nude

It lacks a spine title, something I complained about in my Sugarkiss by e.l.f. Beauty Book review. I have just noticed that my other nine pan palette with a clear plastic window also doesn’t have a title on the spine. Bummer.

Formulation

e.l.f. eyeshadows have greatly improved over the years, but they still have their issues. This palette is no different.

There is a well-rounded mix of matte, pearl, shimmer, and glitter shades. Unfortunately, the two pink glitter shades are not only a fallout mess, they also have almost no pigmentation. I suspect that there’s so much glitter, it prevents the actual color from getting picked up by the brush.

Eyeshadows included in the e.l.f. Beauty Book: Nude

Fortunately, the rest of the eyeshadows have good color payoff and apply well. The lightest matte shade is only slightly chalky.

The Brightening Eyeliner is okay and does the job, but nothing special. It works if you have nothing better lying around.

Shades

I am impressed by the selection of shades for this Beauty Book. e.l.f. does a good job of following trends and that is reflected here. This is a highly versatile palette and I think there are a lot of good looks that can be created. There’s even an emerald, which happens to be the Pantone Color of the Year for 2013.

Swatches for the e.l.f. LE Beauty Book: Nude

The shades, unfortunately, don’t have names. There are two light, pinky-beige shades (matte), two glittery pinks with lavender undertones (glitter), a bronze-y brown (pearl), taupe (pearl), a chocolate (glitter), a gold (shimmer/metallic), and an emerald (shimmer/light glitter).

The emerald is really eye-catching, but watch out: It is fallout central during application.

My favorites are the the emerald, the taupe, the darker matte pink, and the browns.

Conclusion

This is a great palette for both makeup collectors and those wanting to get into fall’s latest trends. Unfortunately, e.l.f. needs to work on the formulation of their glitter shades. There is too much fall out and too little pigmentation.

You may have to go on a scavenger hunt to find the Beauty Books at your local Walgreens. I found mine up on a shelf in the hair products aisle. You can also trying looking at end caps featuring holiday gift sets or in the holiday aisles.
