Spring Fragrances: Vegan & Indie

Below are five of my favorite vegan and indie fragrances that are perfect for spring, as well as for transitioning into the warmer summer months. Normally I prefer heavy warm scents, but sometimes I like to try something a little different. All of the fragrances listed are fragrance/essential oils in an oil base, meaning they are perfect for travel since they are not alcohol based like traditional perfumes.

Fable by Alchemic Muse

Price Tag: $12.00
Weight: 5 ml
Where to Buy: etsy.com

This is my favorite spring fragrance, as well as one of my favorite scents ever. It’s light and sweet, without being overly floral and cloying.

Fable is unlike anything else I wear. I’m not sure how to describe it other than saying it smells like a fairytale. It’s what I imagine Aurora from Sleeping Beauty would wear. I realize that’s not a particularly helpful description, so here is the description from the company:

Choose the path to your own happy ending by virtue of sweet wild strawberries intertwined with woodland roses underscored by mysterious woods, forest earth, and a hint of animal musk [does not actually contain animal ingredients].

Fable is a limited edition scent by the Etsy company Alchemic Muse, so pick it up while you can. Fortunately, it seems to be a standard spring scent that will likely return next year, though I’ve noticed that indie companies have the habit of unexpectedly closing.

Other products with the Fable scent are also available, such as cream soap and body gloss.

Basmati Rose by Epically Epic Soap Co.

Price Tag: $12.00
Weight:
Where to Buy: etsy.com

Since being introduced to the basmati fragrance through Epically Epic, I have become a big fan of the scent. Mind you, it doesn’t smell anything like basmati rice, but still a nice scent all the same.

It may be cliche, but my favorite floral scent is roses. They also used to be my favorite flower, but have since been nudged out by peonies. Oh, and I was born in June and my birth month flower is a rose. I’m kind of biased towards rose scents in general.

While it sounds like a strange combination, Basmati Rose is a simple fragrance combination that works.

Note

At the time this article was published, Epically Epic does not have a separate listing for the Basmati Rose Roll On Perfume. I’m not sure if this is because the perfume hasn’t been re-listed, or if it’s been discontinued. You can, however, request a custom perfume (you should find the listing under the Roll On Perfume category), and even have a custom label crafted. Alternately, you can try Goth Girl, a more traditional rose scent.

Delicacy by Grasse Roots Perfumery

Price Tag: $5 (Sample) / $30 (Travel) / $75 (Regular)
Weight: Sample / 5 ml (Travel) / 15 ml (Regular)
Where to Buy: grasseroots.com

Compared to the earlier perfumes on the list, Delicacy is a much warmer scent. This is a wonderful perfume if you are like me and prefer to wear something heavier, even during the spring and summer months.

From the website:

A soft, mellow chypre with subtle notes of moss, rich, ambrosial rockrose and patchouli; sandalwood is featured, lifted with sweet geranium petals and notes of tea and conifer.

The fragrances by Grassroots Perfumery are entirely comprised of essential oils—as opposed to typical fragrance oils—so they smell differently from traditional, modern perfumes. They won’t persist as long either, so you’ll need to reapply during the day.

Dreamcatcher by Alchemic Muse

Price Tag: $12.00
Weight: 5 ml
Where to Buy: etsy.com

If you’re looking for a clean, spring fragrance with a subtle twist, Dreamcatcher fits the description. I don’t usually like clean fragrances, but I make an exception for this one.

From Alchemic Muse:

Wild honeysuckle flowers with sugared citrus notes of lemon and bergamot peel at play against a sheer base of orange blossoms, muguet and crisp green leaves.

Tuberose Musk

Price Tag: $5 (Sample) / $30 (Travel) / $75 (Regular)
Weight: Sample / 5 ml (Travel) / 15 ml (Regular)
Where to Buy: grasseroots.com

Another essential oil based perfume, Tuberose Musk is a lovely scent suitable for spring, with a subtle spicy undertone.

Grasse Roots Perfumery describes it so:

A tuberose attar is the foundation for a sweet and smoky ode to this spicy, plump and intoxicating white flower. Rich and deep, with sensual vegetable musk and a hint of green freshness.
