Are you a vegetarian or vegan?
I have been a vegetarian since 1999 and a committed vegan since 2002. I had also lived a (mostly) cruelty free lifestyle since I was a tween during the first great environmental movement of the late 80s/early 90s when the concept of cruelty free living took root.
Why did you start {makeupfu}?
I have always loved playing around with makeup, but since becoming vegan in 2002, hands down one of the most difficult products to find was quality vegan makeup—or
any vegan makeup. I have traveled through the dark ages of the orange-y Beauty Without Cruelty lipsticks to the high quality all-vegan line of Zuzu Luxe and Arbonne. Few stores in the old days—including health markets—carried vegan makeup, forcing many women to either buy mail-order or forgo makeup altogether.
Today we are fortunate that mainstream stores like Target and Walgreens now carry vegan lines and the interwebz is teeming with online options. From forums to YouTube, women are flocking to the internet to both give and receive information on the products they purchase. I love trying new makeup and giving honest responses. Let’s face it. A lot of makeup—and especially vegan makeup—is hit or miss.
Hopefully this blog will positively contribute to the growing trend of vegan beauty blogs.
Why is your blog called {makeupfu}?
It’s a quasi-
portmanteau of
“makeup” + “tofu” because I wanted a name that represented my love of both makeup and tofu—er, mostly that of a kawaii nature. That’s where the tagline “Where makeup and tofu meet” comes from.
Tofu, seitan or tempeh?
Honestly, I can’t stand tempeh. I’m always a bit nauseous after eating it. As I mentioned above, I like tofu but I don’t obsess over it.
I do, however, love seitan in all of its forms, whether it’s from a can, vacuum packed or made from scratch in my own kitchen.
Favorite vegan food(s)?
Probably avocado maki or
dukboki. The latter is definitely one of my favorite dishes to make at home.
Masala dosai and inari are pretty good too. Then there’s curry and
okonomiyaki…
And don’t get me started on chocolate.
What is your skin type and tone?
As I have mentioned all over {makeupfu}, I have extremely dry skin. I used to be a normal combination type, but changed after I had my first son.
I fall into a porcelain or ivory skin tone, which basically means my skin is usually one of the palest options around, with neutral to yellow/warm undertones. I’m also categorized as a “Spring” type.
As for makeup, warm shades like browns, golds and corals work best for me. Colors like blue, baby pink, purple and green rarely work and I don’t often buy them.
What foundation shades do you wear?
- e.l.f. Studio face products in Porcelain
- tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer in Ivory (formerly Agent 02)
- Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation in 1.0
Do you have a favorite beauty product?
My favorites would definitely be lip and eye products, but I also have a weakness for blushes, bronzers, and highlighters. I guess…everything?!
Pet peeves
I can’t stand the term lippy. Or panties. Drives me insane.
Although one of my biggest pet peeves is when people claim a certain company is entirely vegan when they totally aren’t. I’ve heard that about tarte, Smashbox, and Urban Decay, to name a few, when nothing could be further from the truth. These people may be well intentioned, but it’s incredibly problematic for vegans trying to find reliable information about a company.
Also, when makeup brands don’t even try to cater to women of color.
I was curious if the dollar store brand sassy+chic was cruelty free and/or vegan.
Unfortunately I have been unable to find out any information on the manufacturing of Sassy + Chic, so I don’t know. 🙁
