Petit Vour Box February 2014: L’amour est magique. Love is magical {Review}

Pros: Diverse selection of products, lots of full size products
Cons: The Amala cleanser is drying for those with dry skin, OFRA blush is so pigmented it can be difficult to control

Figured I’d review February’s box before I posted one for March. It’s taken me awhile to post a review partly because I was a slightly disappointed that I already had one of the main products.

For those of you unfamiliar with Petit Vour (PV), it is a completely vegan beauty subscription box service. It costs only $15 USD/mo and you receive about four products, most of which are generous sample sizes. I think there is always a full-sized product included.

Unboxing and First Impressions

Petit Vour’s pink boxes obviously fit in with this month’s theme of love.

The pink box doesn’t look so out of place this month

Inside the box is the standard grey information card that lists the contents of each month’s box laid atop the black tissue paper wrapped contents.

First look inside

Included in this month’s box are two sample packs of a cleanser/moisturizer/mask, a beauty tea, color corrector, blush, and lip tint.

Theme

Obviously, February’s theme centered around the concept of love. The front of the information card reads:

Love is in the hare…
The best of beauty, without the broken hearts.

Again, I was hoping for more heart shaped/Valentine’s Day inspired products, but I guess there’s always next year.

Amala Purifying Cleanser/Moisturizer/Mask

Rating: B/B-/A (Rated for dry skin)
Size Included in Box: Sample (2 cards)
Weight: 2 ml/0.1 oz each
Where to Buy: amalabeauty.com

Two sample cards of the Amala Purifying facial line were included in this month’s box. There is enough product in each sachet for 2-3 uses each. Both the cleanser and moisturizer are gel based, with the cleanser sudsing up nicely. These are all good products, but unfortunately, gel cleansers—and especially gel moisturizers—just don’t cut it for my dry skin, exacerbating my condition.

Purifying Gel Cleanser

The product is a lightly brown colored, translucent gel with a typical herbal scent. Not as drying as most gel cleansers, but there’s definitely a tightness after my skin dries.

Best suited for those with normal to oily skin types.

Purifying Gel Moisturizer

This has creamy, off-white color with a thin, gel-like consistency, with a scent I can’t place, and dries to a matte finish. I’m not a fan of gel moisturizers because they usually don’t work for my skin type, but I gave this product a fair try. As expected, it doesn’t work with my skin at all, leaving it feeling very tight. I ended up applying my regular moisturizer right away because my skin felt so taut to the point that it was unpleasant.

This product is best for those with normal to oily skin types.

Purifying Clay Mask

I’m always a sucker for masks and I did enjoy this one. It’s has a mottled, greyish blue color with a creamy consistency. I didn’t notice much drying with the product, but then again, I did follow it up with my usual barrage of moisturizers.

Works well for all skin types.

R.L. Linden & Co. Ms. Tilly Rosalie’s Beauty Tea

Rating: N/A
Size Included in Box: Sample
Price Tag: $24 USD for 250ml/1.1 oz (Full size)
Where to Buy: lindenbeauty.com

This is an intriguing product, though I’m not seeing how this helps cleanse your face better than regular steam. After steeping like tea, you cover your head with a towel and hover over it for half an hour.

I rarely sit still for any meaningful length of time, so I admit the thought of having my head over a bowl of tea for half an hour is a little daunting. Hence why I have not tried it yet.

Everyday Minerals Sunlight Color Corrector [Sheer Matte]

Rating: A
Size Included in Box: Mini
Price Tag: $7 USD
Weight: .06oz/1.7g (Mini size)
Where to Buy: everydayminerals.com

I was so happy to see a couple of products from Everyday Minerals and even more excited when I saw I didn’t have this product. Then I realized what it was and knew I had it already. Two to be precise. I like the Sunlight Color Corrector product so much that I have both a full size and sample container of it.

Needless to say, I was disappointed to already have one of the main products in this month’s box.

EDM Sunlight color Corrector

You can use the Sunlight Color Corrector by applying it all over the face or as a spot treatment, like to the undereye area. It works very well as a full face powder to give your skin an all-over glow. When using as a face powder, you can use this product by itself over moisturizer, or in place of your regular face powder over foundation/tinted moisturizer/BB cream.

Like all loose mineral makeup, the Sunlight Color Corrector comes in a clear plastic jar with a sifter top, and is topped with a pearl white lid. Your standard fare.

This is actually the mini size container. There used to be full, mini, and sample sized containers, but it seems EDM is only selling the mini at this time. But that’s okay because there’s so much product here it’s almost full sized anyway. I’ve had the large version for years and barely made a dent in it.

OFRA Pressed Blush in Charm [Matte]

Rating: A
Size Included in Box: Full
Price Tag: $15 USD
Weight: 4 g
Where to Buy: ofracosmetics.com

I love this shade of blush. It’s a neutral, brick coral pink that works very well with my warm undertoned skin. This is my favorite product from February’s Box.

The package is very durable with a glossy, black plastic base and crystal window. The packaging is double-layered, with a mirror on the bottom of the top layer.

You need to be very diligent when applying this blush because it is very pigmented and you run the risk of looking like a clown if you’re not careful. The Studio Small Stippling Brush by e.l.f. is a good brush to use.

I’ve noticed that Charm is very similar to two of the e.l.f. Pressed Mineral Blushes (my review here). It’s somewhere between Sweet Retreat and Cabo Cabana.

Everyday Minerals Tinted Lip Butter in Blooming Mauve [Shimmer/Metallic]

Rating: B+
Size Included in Box: Full
Price Tag: $6 USD
Weight: .09oz/2.6g
Where to Buy: everydayminerals.com

The last product in February’s box is a neutral pink lip tint with slight cool undertones. Even though it is on the cooler side, I don’t seem to have much trouble wearing it. Blooming Mauve is barely darker than my darker-than-average lip color and applies very sheer with lots of shimmer. That it is sheer is probably why I can wear it without it looking off.

The formula is very moisturizing. It’s been a while since I’ve used EDM’s older lip products—they have a short shelf life and mine went bad on me years ago—but I don’t think they were as moisturizing as the new products.

The EDM Tinted Lip Butters are packaged in slim tubes, like those of Silk Naturals Vegan Lipsticks and Vegan Kisser Slickers. I’m glad to see that EDM has abandoned those horrid bulky tinted lip balm packaging (you can see them in a review I did here). I did not like those old containers at all.

Final Thought

My favorites for February’s box are the OFRA Pressed Blush and EDM Tinted Lip Butter. Once I got over the fact that I already had the EDM Sunlight Color Corrector, I can see this is another excellent box. I can’t give a complete total value since Petit Vour has stopped putting the prices down on the info card, but the three full size products come to $28. So that’s a pretty good haul for the $15/mo subsription cost.
