The Studio Lip Lock Pencil is an underrated e.l.f. product that doesn’t get a lot of notice.

Reverse lip liners are great for those of us who don’t want to deal with the hassle of purchasing a bunch of different colors in traditional liners. I’d been eying reverse lip liners for years, not realizing I already had one rattling around in my makeup drawer. It was one of those e.l.f. products I bought, then promptly forgot about.

The e.l.f. Studio Lip Lock Pencil is both cruelty-free and vegan.

The Lip Lock Pencil is packaged in a matte black plastic tube. It is identical to the Studio Matte Lip Colors (my review here). The product twists up from the top part and, like the Matte Lip Colors, there is a sharpener attached to the base. The Lip Lock Pencil has a decent amount of product for the price.

Overall the packaging is adequate and durable enough. I have not had issues with the lip product itself breaking, and I have purchased two liners. However, while I was inspecting the tube for the sharpener, I think I may have damaged the internal spring as it no longer wants to push up the product. So that’s an issue.

The liner has a smooth waxy texture, but I don’t notice it once it’s been applied.

I think the Studio Lip Lock Pencil does a great job of preventing lip color products from bleeding/feathering. It’s especially useful for keeping glosses put. I’ve used both lipsticks and glosses in bright and dark colors without any bleeding and I’ve observed that the product works for at least a few hours, even after reapplying lip color products.

Finally got a decent closeup. White product on a white background is hard to see.

On the down side, the product does contain mineral oil.

How to Use

Traditional lip liners are applied around the edge, and all over the whole lip, in order to prevent lip products from feathering. They also are useful for giving a more polished look to your face.

Reverse liners, on the other hand, are clear and applied to the outside of the lip perimeter. This waxy product prevents lipsticks and glosses from bleeding. Due to the clear color, the Studio Lip Lock Pencil works with all lip color products and skin tones.

Final Thoughts

Pros: Budget-friendly, long-lasting, works with all lip color products and skin tones
Cons: Contains petroleum by-products

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, vegan and cruelty-free reverse lip liner, look no further than the e.l.f. Studio Lip Lock Pencil. It may have a single use purpose, but it does so very well.
