I picked up an e.l.f. Studio HD Lifting Concealer during the e.l.f. 9th Anniversary sale (wow, I can’t believe they’ve been around this long) in August. I was worried that the Fair shade would be too dark, so I chose to go with the color correcting Brightening.

The e.l.f. Studio Lifting Concealer is only available in three skin tone shades, with an additional three color correcting shades.

Packaging

The packaging for the HD Lifting Concealer is a squarish, hard crystal plastic bottle with a matte black lid. The packaging is identical to the Studio Glossy Glosses and Studio Glitter Glosses, only with a doe foot applicator instead of the brush tip.

Unlike the Studio Glossy Glosses, I have not had any trouble with leakage.

Formulation

The consistency is very thick and creamy. Because of this, the HD Lifting Concealer is very concentrated and offers full coverage. If I’m not careful I end up with yellow patches that are difficult to fully blend into my skin, so I only use a light dab or two.

Because the formula is on the thick side, I find that it exacerbates the fine lines under my eyes if I apply too much.

I’m not exactly sure what e.l.f. means when they use the term “HD”. Do they mean the concealer is suitable for HD photos and film? Or do they mean it produces a really smooth finish? The product description does not elaborate.

Shade

The HD Lifting Concealer is only available in three skin tone shades: Fair, Light, and Medium. So there seems to be a shade or three missing from a full line up. I currently own two shades in Brightening (yellow) and Adjusting (mint).

Brightening

I wouldn’t call it a yellow color correcting concealer. Brightening isn’t a sunshine yellow, but rather a very light fair sin color with bright yellow undertones. It could almost pass for an ivory shade.

I went with Brightening for two reasons: 1) It is light enough to work with my skintone and 2) I bought it mostly to cover my under eye circles anyway.

Swatch of e.l.f. Studio HD Lifting Concealer in Brightening

It’s a good thing I picked Brightening. After studying online swatches, I’m convinced the Fair shade is way too dark for my skin tone. I find I can use Brightening on other parts of my face and still look fine.

Final Thoughts

Pros: Full coverage
Cons: Not enough shade selections for skin tones, thick consistency

While I don’t think the e.l.f. Studio HD Lifting Concealer is the best concealer I’ve tried, it’s one of the better offerings from e.l.f. and at $3 you’re not risking much to try it. It conceals well enough and supplies full coverage.

The main issue I have with this concealer is the lack of shade availability. I hope e.l.f. expand the line further in the future because I would like to try a lighter skin tone shade.
